1. Will the Next Zuckerberg Be a Designer, not a Hacker?

A new Silicon Valley fund is gambling that a company founded and led by Web and product designers, rather than engineers, will be the next startup success story. The Designer Fund thinks that Web and mobile companies need to focus on ”creating emotional scaffolding that keeps people coming back,” and that a “designer-founder can bring user-focused insight to everything from interfaces and user experience to information architecture to branding.” Think “co-founder” isn’t on the design career path?

Well you may have heard of a small company called YouTube

YEAH, WELL YOUR AGENCY IS KILLING UNICORNS

The reality is that multiple partners are often involved in a successful Facebook effort. We frequently work closely with agencies of multiple stripes, and often help clients to develop governance frameworks so that each can bring their respective strengths to the table across multiple activities within a single channel.

Digital Digest: The real ‘social media election’ begins after the polls close

Digital Digest: What we’re reading in digital marketing, technology and strategy

Happy long weekend! Digital digest is coming a day early this week. Have a thought? Leave a comment.

1. The real ‘social media election’ begins after the polls close

Ivor Tossel, the Globe’s online culture columnist, argues that a media frenzy over the ‘social media election’ (we’re supposedly in it right now) is overblown, and that elections have less to do with persuasion than we think. The real social media election, he concludes, “begins the day after the polls close and the winner is announced, and it goes on, every day, from there.” Your editor takes a gloomier outlook: politicians, like many brands, communicate too much when they need you, and not enough in between campaigns.

A Day Spent In Good Company

This post also appeared on the Good Purpose Blog.

I recently had the opportunity to present Edelman Canada’s Little Give program at ORENDA’s In Good Company CSR conference, which took place in Toronto last week.  The conference brought together thought leaders in the corporate, not-for-profit and academic sectors to explore the evolution of community investment and to share strategies for creating meaningful corporate community partnerships.   I was thrilled to be able to showcase our program as a best-case example of a truly meaningful initiative in the company of other impressive CSR programs from Microsoft Canada, Corel Corporation, L’Oreal Canada and others.

Nouveaux bureaux

Notre nouvelle adresse made in plateau : 4446 Boulevard St-Laurent, bureau 501. Vous pouvez nous rejoindre en utilisant le même numéro de téléphone général: 514 844-6665

Voici quelques photos de l’espace – très moderne-monochrome-minimaliste !

A Sneak Peek at the New Edelman Montreal Office

It took eight months, over a hundred boxes, a team of professional movers, a super dedicated moving committee, and one day of total office shutdown (which, as you know, for PR is – gasp – not easy), but the Edelman Montreal office has officially moved from its Golden Square Mile location to the Plateau area.

Starting today, you will be able to find us at 4446 Boulevard St-Laurent, office 501. The main phone line still remains the same.

Here’s a sneak peek, but we promise more pictures and details as soon as the place is up and running!

Digital Digest: Facebook advertising getting more expensive

Digital Digest – What’s new and emerging in marketing, technology and strategy.

1. Facebook advertising getting more expensive
According to ad management platform provider Efficient Frontier, clicks on Facebook’s self-serve ads cost 40% more last quarter than they did in the previous quarter. Advertiser interest in Facebook has grown rapidly over the past several years. With more than half a billion users, it is the biggest social networking hub in the world, making it one of the top digital platforms on which to reach consumers. And it’s generally pretty cheap. But that may be changing

Just one more thing hardworking Canadian families can’t afford.

Behind the Scenes: Insight into Edelman Inside

It’s mid-April, and I’m in my final week of a six-month Edelman Inside experience.  It started as a two-month project, working 2-3 days a week out of my client’s office, helping to execute the internal communications strategy and plan that our account team had spent months putting together for the client.  It grew into a six-month engagement.  We had recommended they hire someone; not only to work through the plan and to execute on the recommendations we’d made, but also to operate in a full-time capacity as an internal communications manager. We knew that they needed someone to provide strategic communications counsel to senior executives and work with the marketing and human resources teams to ensure the successful implementation of a variety of new programs.  Read more »

We are all Canucks

Today is a very exciting day: NHL PLAYOFFS BEGIN!

Our hometown Vancouver Canucks dominated the regular season winning trophies, breaking records, and ending up first overall in the league.  So as you can imagine, this year the post-season has generated a little extra buzz around the city and our office.

Can we be authentic and in PR?

As a PR professional working in a global company, it can be challenging to be authentic all the time. In some cases, it’s not appropriate to comment on a product of a client’s competitor — whether you really like it or you don’t. And, goes without saying, really never appropriate to make a negative comment about a client’s product.

Be Heard Above The Noise – What’s Your Story?
A GOOD TIME TO BE A MINER

I had the chance in early March to attend the PDAC (Prospector & Developers Association of Canada) Conference in Toronto. With commodities prices soaring, the mining sector is seeing a renaissance and the giddy mood of the 28,000 miners at the event is reflective of these better times! Money is flowing, companies are able to get financing for their projects and along with it, and dollars are also being spent again on communications, usually one of the first things to fall off the table when times get tough.
