I was genuinely surprised the other night at a dinner we hosted for two Canadian clients who work for a multinational energy company. Without prompting, one stated that what she is most impressed about the Vancouver office, and what draws her to working with us, is our CSR program – The Little Give. In June this year, we’ll be going into our fourth annual The Little Give event – a time when the entire office gives 48 hours of their time, as well as the company kicking in $7,500 in cash – divided among three deserving non profit organizations that work to improve the lives of children and youth.

1. Zuckerberg: Bake Social Design Into Your Products
Though Mark Zuckerberg has been flirting with streaming movies through Facebook, on Wednesday he indicated Facebook would not be getting into the movie, music or book markets. Speaking in Paris ahead of the G8 summit, Zuckerberg said that most companies haven’t matched game designers like Zynga in “baking the principles of social design” into their products. “But I hope we can help those companies become more social. We’re going to see a lot of the transformation in these industries over the next three, five years that we have with gaming so far.”
Every company is a media company.

Read more »

This is an interesting contrast with Edelman’s own research, which lumps Canadian trust in media (at below 50%) with the “Distrusters”, a group that includes Italy and Russia. Search engines, meanwhile, dominate how we find news.
I’m not convinced there’s a contradiction here, because wired Canadians can use search engines as the gate into content from trusted media outlets (i.e. we recognize that search engines are good at finding, and journalists are good at journalism).
What do you think?

1. My Twitterspat With Paul Kagame
Rwanda’s foreign minister got in on it too. Seriously.
May 20, 2011 in Digital Digest, Our IdeasMost Google Doodles are tied to holidays, historical events or iconic figures from history. Some are regional in nature, others are global. You can find a list of them here. Given their broad nature, most of the searches that the Doodles link to tend to rank Wikipedia articles very highly. Therefore, if we look at the amount of traffic these Wikipedia pages get on Doodle Day, we can get a sense for just how powerful they are as a traffic driver.

1. The hermetic and arrogant New York Times
Reuters media blogger Felix Salmon launches an attack on “dinosaur” Arthur Brisbane, the Ombudsman for the New York Times, whose official account of how the NYT broke the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death ignores earlier updates on Twitter. Brisbane’s version, wherein the NYT breaks the story at 10:40pm on its website, ignores contributions from other NYT journalists to the real-time timeline, argues Salmon: ”As far as Twitter is concerned, the news was broken by Keith Urbahn at 10:24pm. But it really got momentum from being retweeted at 10:25pm by NYT media reporter Brian Stelter, who added the crucial information that Urbahn is Donald Rumsfeld’s chief of staff.”
The New York Times won’t link to any of the original tweets, either.

The days of the news embargo are numbered…
Traditional media took another big hit last week after social media led discussion and debate around two major events. Not only was the death of Osama Bin Laden tweeted ahead of the US President’s official statement to the globe (including by his own staffers!) but preliminary Canadian federal election results were released via social media ahead of approval by Elections Canada. With stakeholders no longer satisfied with one-off charitable events, there seems to be a palpable shift among practitioners towards CSR projects that achieve economic and social returns while conveying genuineness. When initiatives match these criteria, the results are optimal for the company and the community. Such was the case with Edelman, a leading public relations firm, and The Little Give initiative, where Toronto staff helped two local non-profits (KUPE Arts Society and Sketch) over a 48-hour period in 2010.

May 9, 2011 in External posts, Our IdeasOn April 27, members of Toronto’s Corporate and Public Affairs practice traded in their blazers and heels for brooms and slider shoes at the Royal Canadian Curling Club. With only two players who’d ever hit the rink before, standing firm on the ice proved to be the first challenge for the group at this year’s team offsite. Armed with basic instructions, a competitive spirit, and more sarcastic barbs than a Comedy Central celebrity roast, players used the event to mark the collective accomplishments of the practice over the last year and gave its players a chance to come together outside the office to learn a popular Canadian sport.
