Read more »

These Days the Web Unmasks Everyone

The Web is confusingly credited for being a bastion of both anonymity and of transparency. This conflict may be resolving, as Stanley Cup rioters in Vancouver found out when their friends identified them in photos and videos posted online. Are we being propelled into an era when “every embarrassing video, every intimate photo, and every indelicate e-mail is attributed to its source, whether that source wants it to be or not”?

We’re all Big Brother, really.

Cloudy with a Chance of Communications

In the era of cloud computing, any breech in privacy or security – even a minor one – is the fastest way to erode brand equity and consumer trust. Botching the communications around these events or, worse, not being proactive ahead of time to think the unthinkable, could clinch that your brand may never be able to stage a comeback.

Social media’s mob mentality: Lessons to be learned from the Vancouver Riots

My colleague, Sara, wrote a great post on the Vancouver riots and Public Engagement. And while I agree with much of what she says, I do think that there are some cautionary lessons to be learned about Social Media from the Vancouver riots alongside the more positive ones. Read more »

The Vancouver riots and public engagement

One of the more fascinating examples of public engagement I’ve seen in a long time has just unraveled on the streets of Vancouver, and I can’t help but watch this story unfold in fascination- both from the point of view of a concerned citizen, as well as a professional communicator.

Aaron Patzer, Founder of Mint.com

Canadian launch of Mint.com

Mint.com is an easy, online tool that accurately and securely tracks spending habits of Canadians and enables them to set budgeting goals. The launch of Mint.com in Canada took place during a year when Canadian household debt was at an all time high and the need to take control of personal finances was critical. A year prior to the launch, Intuit, makers of TurboTax and Quicken, purchased the US site and quickly identified Canada as the first region in Mint’s international expansion. As the first market for Mint.com outside the US, Intuit identified this launch as a major priority – setting the stage for additional rollout of Mint.com into other markets across the world. PR was the only communications tool used to drive awareness and spur registration growth. The PR program strictly consisted of media relations. Therefore a phased approach to the launch was developed to maximize the newsworthiness of a company founded by one of Silicon Valley’s most successful entrepreneurs, Aaron Patzer and drive awareness and adoption.

1. Twitter, Google add to the pile of social sharing buttons

Google and Twitter are releasing more social buttons to be embedded on websites. Twitter’s new follow button will allow Internet users to follow a Twitter account without clicking through to Twitter (e.g. @JLo from Jennifer Lopez’s IMDB page); and Google’s +1 button, which you can click on to vote up content you like, can now be embedded in websites (previously it was only available in search results).

Button, button, who’s got the button?

Bonus: Twitter is launching a photo-sharing service.
