Who watched the Ontario Election Leader’s Debate?

For the first time in my adult life I was not in the campaign office on debate night.  Usually my interaction with the Leaders’ debate has involved organizing my Leaders’ activities in and around the debate.  But this time I was home in my basement taking notes, one eye on the television, and one eye on my tablet tracking the dialogue on the #voteon and #onpoli Twitter hashtags.  And as I sat there “working”, enthralled as only a political junkie like me can be a couple of questions entered my mind.  They were prompted by two things: my watch and the noises coming from upstairs.   This debate started at 6:30 pm.  What do people normally do around 6:30 pm on a week night?  As evidenced by the clamour I heard it involved something like corralling the kids to eat dinner, bathe and get ready for bed.   Was I courting serious trouble by not helping with the kids, and was anyone else watching this thing?  The answer was affirmative on both counts. Digital Digest #45: Dealing with Facebook Edition

Digital Digest: What Edelman Canada is reading in digital marketing, technology and strategy. Fresh links served up Fridays.

Mark Zuckerberg, the 27-year-old boss of the world’s largest social network, thinks big. At Facebook’s F8 Developer Conference last week he said that a bundle of new features were an effort to “rethink some industries.” Big brands, who will sink as much as $6 billion into social media campaigns this year, are paying attention.

Having already revolutionized marketing once, Facebook seems intent on doing it again. This creates a tough question for those who lead social media programs: what are the best practices for a platform that is constantly changing things? In this week’s edition of Edelman Canada’s Digital Digest we look at how social media strategists can take advantage of Facebook’s new features. Read more »

First the Ontario Election debate, then the home stretch

We’ve just come through the dog days of the 2011 Ontario election campaign.  Less than nine days to go and still no clear winner in sight if the polls are to be believed.  One thing is for sure, the Twitterverse coverage of the campaign hit a lull in the past week.  Expect that to change tonight as reporters, party workers, and die hard supporters take to their mobile devices and laptops in full force covering the leaders debate.  No stone will be left unturned as reporters will give running commentary of what’s said by the leaders, and what’s spun to them by party staffers.  Each political party and their staff will use all possible mediums to sing the praises of their respective leader, and jump on the failings of their opponents.  Read more »

Digital Digest #44: The “Rapid Change” Edition

Digital Digest: What Edelman Canada is reading in digital marketing, technology and strategy. Fresh links served up Fridays.

Following Facebook’s announcement of a slew of new features on Thursday, digital consultant and Mashable columnist Macal Wright tweeted ”Facebook just changed all of your strategies, your marketing tactics and business models in 1 hour. You’ll have to adapt.”

Organizations and the people who run them can feel like they are sprinting just to keep up with an accelerating rate of change. This feeling isn’t going away: in a 2003 interview (Facebook would be founded the next year) futurist Ray Kurzweil argued that the 21st century would be packed with as much innovation as the previous 20,000 years. As a result, organizations today need to be able to redefine their strategies and tactics at an ever-faster pace. In this week’s edition of Edelman Canada’s Digital Digest we look at how organizations are dealing with rapid change.
