Today in Davos, Switzerland, Richard Edelman is releasing the global results of the 2011 Edelman Trust Barometer. The Canadian findings will be made available shortly at the Canadian Club in Toronto on February 14th (Megan Spoore, 416-849-2841) Until then, I am pleased to provide a high level summary of this year’s key findings, along with a link to the findings in more detail at www.edelman.com/trust/2011. Today is the second annual Community Manager Appreciation Day! This day was conceived by Jeremiah Owyang as a day where we in the digital community honour and thank the hard working people that make a difference in how companies build relationships with their customers. Edelman.ca put a call out to our own managers to find out what they love about their jobs and how they keep our clients online communities fresh, fun, and exciting. Three Edelman Canada Community Managers, Laura Muirhead, Christine Lu, and Brittany Dow, shared their thoughts with us:

Corporate Insights is a monthly newsletter where the team at Edelman Canada shares something interesting that deserves a wider audience or develops a point of view related to our expertise in communications and corporate reputation.
This post was co-authored with Harlan Loeb, US Practice Director for Crisis.
It was just a matter of time. WikiLeaks plans to turn its attention early next year to releasing massive batches of internal documents from corporations, complementing its prodigious data-dump of U.S. government documents and diplomatic dispatches. Apparently, the first target is a major not-yet-identified U.S. bank. Even if figurehead and chief spokesman Julian Assange’s arrest this week should represent more than a small hiccup in WikiLeaks’ momentum (very unlikely), other sites such as OpenLeaks have already emerged as a secondary haven for subversive activities, “whistleblowers” and disgruntled employees.

Like it or not, “digital” is becoming a part of more and more marketers’ jobs. The implications of this are broader than just tacking-on another channel to an existing marketing plan – developing digital approaches require a shift in mind-set from traditional channels, whether they’re owned, earned or paid.
Here are five ways to begin to shift your thinking from traditional communications to social communications.

Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM) launched an online contest in early November asking people to upload photos of their pets to a website. People will vote for the cutest and/or most fun photo and the owner of the photo with the most “likes” will win a $1000 gift card for Shoppers Drug Mart. [correction: there is also a judging component to the contest so the winner is a combination of votes and the judges decision].
From what I can tell, the contest has been pretty successful so far, thousands of photos have been uploaded and one photo has over 10,000 votes.
But this afternoon a wild card entered the picture… Read more »

It’s a fact across the board – turnover is common in public relations.
Not only is this a costly issue for companies, but can be detrimental to potential employees showing they are “careerist” driven without a drive to development under a specific company. Of course, salary factors are a major pull but often the issues of turnover are far more rooted than simply dollars and cents.
So why, in an industry that is very much based on establishing and maintaining customers’ brand loyalty, is there such a high rate of turnover?

Finally got around to reading Malcolm Gladwell’s controversial New Yorker article excoriating technophiles and technoutopians for overrating social media’s ability to effect social change. For those who don’t want to read the whole article, here’s the Coles/Cliffs Notes version.

Are you focusing your Facebook investment in the right place?
The immensely smart Jay Baer directed my attention to research conducted by Jeff Widman of Brand Glue, who found that 99.5% of comments on his clients’ status updates come from peoples’ newsfeeds, not from the pages themselves.
Interesting, right? As Jay notes, this means that a lot of effort which is expended on customizing fan pages on Facebook is, frankly, wasted. Read more »

I’m sure we’ve probably all done it before: pull out your smart phone, locate a free public wi-fi connection and check your favourite social media channel for updates while you’re on the go.
Thanks to Firesheep however- a free plug-in for the Mozilla Firefox browser- it’s even easier than ever before for someone to hack into your Facebook or Twitter account on open wi-fi, and that puts your privacy at serious risk.
Check out the news story on Yahoo Canada for further details.
Facebook has stated that it will be introducing increased security measures on the site soon, but in the meantime, be extra careful about what information and accounts you access via open wi-fi.

Here’s your Facebook page management tip of the day:
There is a new spam filter in place on most Facebook pages now. It’s designed to help identify spam more easily so you can flag or delete it from your wall.
If you’re a page administrator, go to your page and take a look at the space beneath the “what’s on your mind” area. You should see an “options” link which, once clicked, allows you to see a series of content filters (just your posts, your posts plus fans, etc.). Click on “spam” and manage accordingly.
Thanks Facebook!

On the day of the Ontario municipal elections the following thought crossed my mind. We’ve made a lot of advances in technology and have put a lot of faith in digital security. We do our banking online and make payments through our mobile devices. These are seriously personal transactions with dire consequences if breached. So how come we can’t vote online?

Pew Internet released their Mobile Health 2010 Report last week, highlighting the increasing role of mobile devices in the online health-information environment, particularly among younger adults. Some key highlights:
These figures are likely to continue to grow as more and more people replace their feature phones with app-ready smartphones. Coupled with data from the 2010 Edelman Health Engagement Barometer that found over 80% of Canadians are engaged in health, these figures paint a compelling case for businesses to explore mobile health applications.

That loud crack you heard wasn’t the tectonic plates shifting. It was just an announcement from Facebook.
Ok, so not that earth-shattering, but Facebook has just announced a new set of features that are rolling out for page managers intended to make life a little easier.

A so-so article was posted on the social media news site Mashable yesterday. It’s a roundtable discussion about how small businesses are using Twitter. For savvy social media folk, there’s nothing revolutionary here: yes, it’s time consuming; yes, you have to be prepared to accept negative Tweets, etc., etc. Read more »
