Suzuki’s Ontario Liberal party “endorsement” pulled due to connection with charitable organization

David Suzuki’s video endorsing the OLP was pulled after some opponent rumblings that it was tantamount to an endorsement by the David Suzuki Foundation – a clear no-no, as registered charities cannot participate in partisan politics in Canada.

The OLP quickly removed the video to appease critics, but it raises the question – at what point does a private citizen become the embodiment of an organization? The Foundation stated that it was not behind the endorsement, and that Suzuki “Occasionally…expresses his own personal opinion.” Fair point. But as the name, face and voice of the David Suzuki Foundation, is it really possible to separate the man from the machine? Read more »

How did this week’s “foreign workers” discussion play out online?”

One week into the Ontario election and you would be forgiven if you thought this campaign was about foreign-credentialed professionals seeking employment.  And depending on your political bent the debate could be summed up as either pandering to foreign workers and affirmative action or xenophobia and the threat of Tea Party north.  On September 5, the governing Ontario Liberals released their election platform which included plans for a $12 million program intended to encourage employers to hire foreign trained professionals.

Edelman ELECT looked into the use of words like foreign worker, foreigners, affirmative action, xenophobia, immigrant, apology, and division and applied them to discussion hashtags #voteON and #ONpoli.  Between September 5 and September 11 nearly 8000 tweets that included Tim Hudak and/or the Ontario PCs used one or more of these terms.  Read more »
